Monster Phonics 1.4

The Monster Phonics resources are recognized by the Department for Education in the UK (2014) as highly effective multi-sensory phonics materials. Additionally, the scheme was selected by BETT Futures as one of the top 20 most innovative new ed-tech ideas in the UK. The associated app supports the development of reading and spelling skills for the first 100 high-frequency words and complements a comprehensive phonics programme aligned with the New Curriculum for Spelling (KS1) and Reception phonics instruction.

Monster Phonics is a synthetic phonics scheme distinguished by its use of character-driven (monster) cues and colour coding to represent vowels (A, E, I, O, U), diphthongs (oo, ow), silent letters, and other challenging graphemes. Each monster and its assigned colour correlates with specific graphemes that convey the corresponding phoneme.

The Monster Phonics apps have been specifically designed to enhance phonics accessibility for diverse learners. The innovative application of colour coding and characterisation has been shown to significantly accelerate reading progress. Furthermore, the scheme incorporates handwriting instruction, emphasizing correct letter formation for the first 100 high-frequency words.

The app illustrating the first 100 words demonstrates how colour use can improve accessibility for young learners. The colour coding notably reduces the number of "tricky" words, making them easier to decode. Plans include two additional apps covering a total of 300 high-frequency words. Once mastered, these core words become integral to children's reading vocabulary, as they account for approximately 65% of all reading material. Rapid acquisition of these words is vital across early literacy development.
